LIFESTYLE MEDICINE

Did you know that

the vast majority of chronic health conditions and
what we think of as age-related health changes

can be prevented and even reversed?

Chronic disease is not your destiny

Lifestyle Matters

Take control of your health and your future

LIFESTYLE MEDICINE IS

an evidence-based approach to

PREVENT, BETTER MANAGE, or REVERSE

chronic health conditions

You think that as you get older

--> You're "destined" to gain weight, develop high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, cognitive decline, or even cancer.

--> You think that since others in your family have these conditions, you will, too.

--> You've been told there's nothing you can do for your autoimmune disease other than taking medication.

--> If you're a woman, you've probably been told that once you hit your 40's (around perimenopause/menopause), that you're going to gain belly fat, it will be impossible to lose weight, and that you just won't feel like yourself anymore.

It IS true, that many Americans are not well; in fact,

Chronic disease is the leading cause of death and disability in the U.S.,
with 60% of U.S. adults having at least one condition and 40% having 2 or more chronic diseases.

Diabetes and weight issues are incredibly prevalent:

34 million people in America live with type 2 diabetes
72% of Americans are clinically overweight or obese

Lifestyle Medicine Can Address up to 80% of Chronic Disease

Lifestyle medicine can address up to 80% of chronic diseases.

The vast majority of chronic health conditions are impacted by lifestyle and can be improved with lifestyle changes

  • Hypertension
  • Cholesterol
  • Heart disease
  • Heart attack and stroke
  • Type 2 diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Osteoporosis
  • Multiple types of cancer
  • Autoimmune disease such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Crohn's Disease, Lupus, and more
  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease
  • Cognitive decline and Alzheimer's Disease
  • Kidney disease
  • Erectile dysfunction
  • and more...

Heredity vs Lifestyle

  • Heredity plays only a 20% factor in a person’s health.
  • The cause of 80% of disease is impacted by lifestyle and socio-economic factors.
  • To a very large extent, a person has the power, through their own lifestyle choices, to take control of their health destiny.

The same factors that drive one chronic condition are the ones that drive the majority of chronic conditions

If you work to make changes to positively impact one condition (cholesterol, for example), it can have a positive impact on other conditions such as blood sugar, and blood pressure, and even the risk of some cancers.

80% of heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes and 40% of cancer could be prevented,
primarily with improvements to diet and lifestyle. (World Health Organization)

Menopause is related

When it comes to midlife changes such as perimenopause and menopause, many of the symptoms you're experiencing can be positively impacted by making lifestyle changes.

The symptoms are in fact, a sign that you need to start making changes.

Why?  Because not making lifestyle changes has a domino effect that can lead to high cholesterol, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease, osteoporosis, and more.

Lifestyle Medicine is not alternative medicine...
it's the foundation of conventional medicine.

"Lifestyle medicine is actually the foundation of conventional medicine. Clinical practice guidelines for the top lifestyle-related chronic diseases support lifestyle medicine as the first line of treatment, before medications." (ACLM)

Health Coaching is the key to success

For the patient with a health challenge, the "lifestyle prescription" has usually been told to them by a healthcare provider.  They are often told to be less sedentary, manage stress better, get more sleep, improve their nutrition, etc. If they can be directed to a well-trained wellness coach, the prescription for lifestyle change can be successfully "filled".  - Michael Arloski, Ph.D., PCC
